Clinical characteristics and clinical thinking of 94 cases with styloid syndrome

OBJECTIVE To judge the indication of operation for styloid process syndrome and to analyse the postoperative effect according to the clinical symptom,physical examination and the CT examination.METHODS94 cases of styloid process syndrome during 2010-01-2019-01 were analyzed retrospectively.Three surgical approaches were conducted including truncation of the styloid process through the external cervical approach,tonsillectomy and styloid process truncation,and preserved tonsillar styloid process truncation.Postoperative effects were analysed.RESULTS The length of styloid process amputation was 25-61 mm in 94 patients,with anaverage of 33 mm.Follow-up period was 3-36 months,with an average of 15 months.Among them,45 cases(48%)were cured,31 cases(33%)were effective,and 18 cases(19%)were ineffective.SPSS19.0 software was used for rank sum test,and there was no statistical difference in the effect of the three surgeries(H=0.521,P>0.05).Among them,20 patients underwent truncation of the styloid process through the external cervical approach,45 cases with tonsillectomy and styloid process truncation,and 29 cases with preserved tonsillar styloid process truncation.CONCLUSIONSurgery is an effective method to treat styloid process syndrome,but it should be combined with imaging examination and specialphysical examination to strictly grasp the indications of operation and avoid unnecessaryoperation.
