Abstract: | Tobacco smoking continues to be a major public health problem. Few smokers present themselves for treatment, and it is important to offer a range of interventions that appeal to different individual needs and preferences. Computer-tailored feedback can fill the gap between generic self-help and intensive clinical therapy. Using focus groups, we investigated smokers' perceptions of generic self-help materials and computer-generated individually tailored feedback reports. Participants recognized the generic nature of self-help material and welcomed the concept of personal support, but were concerned about some aspects of the material. Findings supported the continuation of the development and delivery of computer-tailored feedback, but more research is warranted to optimize the content and style of the feedback for individual perceptions and expectations. |
