Relationship between mobile phone addiction and mental health in college students: Mediating effect of attention bias

Objective To explore the relationship between mobile phone addiction and mental health and attention bias, and explore the mediating effect of attention bias. Methods A total of 479 college students were investigated with the self-designed general information questionnaire, Mobile Phone Addiction Index (MPAI), Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale (DASS-21), and the Attention to Positive and Negative Information Scale (APNI). Results A total of 500 questionnaires were issued, of which 479 were valid questionnaires, and the effective recovery rate was 95.8%. The average total score of college students was (41.18±12.20) for MPAI, (13.88±11.43) for DASS-21, and (42.81±8.69) for positive APNI, and (29.81±8.22) for negative APNI. The Pearson correlation analysis showed that mobile phone addiction was positively correlated with mental health and negative attention bias (r=0.453, P<0.01; r=0.404, P<0.01), mental health was negatively correlated with positive attention bias (r=-0.318, P<0.01) and was positively correlation with negative attention bias (r=0.567, P<0.01). Conclusion The attention bias of college students plays a mediating role between mobile phone addiction and mental health, and we should pay high attention to the harm of mobile phone addiction to mental health in college students, so as to improve their mental health.
