An analysis on results of monitoring nontyphoidal Salmonella in diarrhea patients in Huizhou

Objective To investigate prevalence baseline of nontyphoidal Salnonella in Huizhou city,to identify an epidemic outbreak earlier,and to analyze epidemic factors.To explore the serotypes,distribution,and changes in drug resistance of nontyphoidal Salmonella isolated from diarrhea patients,in order to instruct clinical use of medication.Methods Stool specimens of diarrhea patients collected from 2008 to 2009 in the surveillance hospitals in Huizhou were detected for nontyphoidal Salmonella.The isolated strains were further serotyped; drug sensitivity testing and pulse field gel electrophoresis were performed.Results Of 430 diarrhea patients,19 were infected by Salmonella,with the positive rate of 4.42％.The 19 strains had five serotypes,mainly Salmonella typhimurium ( 47.37％ ) and Salmonella enteritidis ( 26.32％ ).Most strains of Salmonellas were sensitive to common antibiotics including cephems and quinolones.Conclusions Salmonella is an important type of enteric pathogen and it causes disease by oral pathway.We should strengthen food safety surveillance and of health education on personal protection,eventually prevent infection with Salmonella.
