Nursing experience in support therapy of peripherally inserted PICC for 30 very low birthweight premature children

Objective： To explore the application of peripherally inserted central catheter（PICC） in very low birthweight premature children.Methods： 1.9FR×50 cm central venous catheter purchased from BD Ltd.of United States were applied as PICC in 30 very low birthweight premature children,insertion status shown by X-ray and extubation time were observed.Results： PICC were successful in all 30 cases with an average indwelling time of 3～31 d,early extubation included accidental situation in 15 cases,blocked catheter in 6 cases,extravasation in 4 cases.X-ray showed the inserted catheter located in the 2,3 intercostal space for 12 cases,subclavian vein in 6 cases,at acromion in 5 cases,and in the right atrium for 7 cases.Conclusions： As a safe,simple and complication-free procedure,PICC provides the premature children with long-term intravenous access of nutrition.
