Abstract:Objective To investigate the changes of trace elements (Zn,Cu, Fe, Se) in erythrocytes of patients with Graves' disease (GD). Methods The plasma thyroid hormones levels and the contents of trace elements in erythrocytes were determined with RIA and atom absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) respectively in 42 cases of GD, before trentment 20 cases of GD patients after therapy (in euthyroid state) and 30 normal controls. Results Without treatment the contents of microelements Zn, Se in erythrocytes were significantly lower ( p <0 01) and Cu, Fe were significantly higher ( p<0 01?p<0 05 ) in GD patients than those in normal controls. The content of Zn was negatively correlated to FT 4 ( r=-0 542,p<0 01 ) and Cu was positively correlated to FT 4 levels ( r=0 311,p<0 05 ). The contents of microelements Zn, Se in erythrocytes after treatment were significantly higher ( p<0 01?p<0 05 ) and Cu, Fe were significantly lower ( p<0 05 ) than those before treatment. However, the Se content was still lower and Cu content Still higher than that in the controls ( p<0 01,p<0 05 respectively). Conclusion The trace elements metabolism in erythrocytes might be adversely influenced by excess of thyroid hormones in patients with GD.
