Abstract: | One of the greatest figures in the history of British hospitalsin the twentieth century was not a doctor, but a former steelworkerfrom Glasgow who later became a social worker and then a filmmaker. His name was James Robertson. Robertson started his researches into paediatric wards in Britainin 1948. At that time, sick children were routinely separatedfrom their parents for long periods of time.
