An Ultrastructural Study of Darter's Disease

Lesions excised from two patients with Darier's disease were studied by ele- ctron microscopy. It is speculated that in Darier's disease, dyskeratosis and acantholysis are the morphological end-result of an hereditary error in the syn- thesis. organization or the tonofilament-desmonsome complex. Our study shows that the abnormal cytoplasmic vacuolization may be the anatomical event that produces corps ronds, and subsequent excessive aggregation of tonofilament may produce grains. The basal keratinocyte herniations from basal keratinocytes may reflect activity of the disease, and the "corps ronds phenomenon" may be the nature and the pathogenesis of acantholysis and dyskeratosis in Darier's disease.
