Abstract: | A tracheostomy is an artificial opening in the trachea that is held open by a tracheostomy tube. Inspired and expired air bypasses the mouth and nose. There is a range of reasons for performing a tracheostomy, including long-term mechanical respiratory support from, for example, a ventilator. |
