Abstract:Objective To evaluate the effects of contralateral routing of sound(CROS)hearing aid in patients with unilateral hearing loss by speech recognition and client oriented scale of improvement(COSI).Methods Speech recognition and Quick-SIN were evaluated in quiet and noise environment before and after CROS hearing aid intervention in 20 patients with unilateral deafness,and COSI after 6 weeks of hearing aid usage.Results In quiet environment and at signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)=5 dB and SNR=10 dB,speech recognition score in patients wearing CROS was significantly higher than that in patients without CROS(P<0.001)but showed no significant difference when SNR was 0 dB(P=0.242).SNR loss with and without CROS was significantly different in 12 patients(P<0.001)and not so in the rest 8 patients(P=0.095).At 6 weeks follow-up,77% of the patients had a final ability score≥4,basically consistent with subjectively reported improvement.CROS hearing aid significantly improved communication comfort in most patients in specific situations.Conclusion Patients with unilateral deafness can benefit significantly from using CROS hearing aid in quiet environment.In noise,the benefits increase as the signal-to-noise ratio increases.
