The combination of all-trans retinoic acid and arsenic trioxide for the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia

Objective To observe the remission rate and achieving remission time and survival rate of different inducing treatments in acute promyelocytic Leukemia(APL).Methods 53 new diagnostic APL patients were enrolled.26 patients(treatment group) were treated with ATRA combined with AS2O3;27 patients(control group)were treated only with ATRA.The CR rate,achieving remission time and survival rate were observed,respectively.Results ① During inducing period,23 patients treated with AS2O3 and ATRA acquired complete remission,and the average time of achieving remission 24.35±3.97 days;however,treated with ATRA alone,only 21 patients acquired complete remission,and the average time of achieving remission was 38.05±4.67 days.② Two groups continued with consolidation treatment schedule after complete remission,the 3-year overall survival rate in treatment group and control group was(95.65±4.35)%and(71.45±3.55)%(P<0.05) ③ At diagnosis,the remission rate of patients with white blood cell counts above 10×109/L or below 10×109/L was 4/9(44%)and 40/44(90.9%)respectively.the 3-year overall survival rate(33.35±2.55)% and(77.25±3.55)%(P=0.016).Conclusion The combination of ATRA and AS2O3 in the treatment of APL can obtain a higher CR rate and a short duration for achieving CR.
