FOOD AND OBESITY IN THE RAT

Adult rats from several strains show increased proliferation of adipocytes in response to feeding a highly palatable, high fat or high carbohydrate diet. The increased number of adipocytes persists after weight loss. The ability of the rat to increase size and number of adipocytes seems to be related to the amount of food consumed prior to weaning.
