Effect of an Acute Care Risk Management Model on Self-care Ability of Elderlies and their Risk of Adverse Events in Hospitals

Objective To investigate influence of an acute care risk management model for the elderlies(ACE)on their self-care ability and their risk of adverse events with acute exacerbation of chronic diseases in hospitals.Method A total of 85 patients were recruited from September 2019 to March 2020 as the ACE group.According to the similar self-care abilities(Barthel index±1),85 patients were selected from January to August 2019 as the control group,in a ratio of 1:1.ACE group adopted ACE,and control group adopted routine nursing.Changes in activities of daily living,risk of fall,pressure ulcer and deep venous thrombosis(DVT)and adverse events in hospital were recorded and compared between the two groups.Results Compared with the controls of routine nursing,the risk management model of ACE significantly improved the self-care ability of the elderly patients(P<0.01),as well as significantly reduced the risk of pressure ulcers,number of hospital days and costs during hospitalization(all P<0.05).The percentages of aspiration,fall and incontinence dermatitis events in the patients during hospitalization were significantly lower than the controls(all P<0.05).The ACE and routine nursing unit had no influence on risk of fall and of DVT in the nursing mode.Conclusions Compared with routine nursing,the risk management model of ACE effectively improved the self-care ability of elderly patients,and reduced the risk of pressure ulcers,the occurrence of adverse events in hospitals and the economic burden of patients.
