Qualitative study on self-management of diet among maintenance hemodialysis patients

Objective To have a deep insight into self-management of diet among maintenance hemodialysis patients.Methods Hermeneutic phenomenology was used to investigate 10 maintenance hemodialysis patients in terms of their self-management of diet.Results Maintenance hemodialysis patients relied on the weight of the food they ate to judge the quantity and calories of carbohydrates,protein and fat.They had poor control of water intake,and they had a superficial knowledge of trace elements.Conclusion Self-management of diet among maintenance hemodialysis patients is uneven.Medical staff should strengthen cognitive education about the importance of diet control,develop easy tools for patients to calculate the specific quantity and calories of food,assess the reasons for why patients have poor control of water intake,and implement comprehensive interventions,so as to improve the level of self-management of diet and nutrition,decrease the rate of complications,increase survival rate and improve their quality of life.
