在18世纪东西方历史发展的关键时期 ,古老的中国未能藉助传教士这一特殊的媒介 ,开展东西文化交流 ,促进中国科学技术的进步 ;也未能利用马夏尔尼使团来华的契机 ,进行正常的国际交往 ,推动中外贸易的发展。当西方在了解东方 ,世界在走向中国之时 ,东方的文明古国却依然故我 ,既不屑于了解西方 ,也不愿意走向世界 ,以至一次又一次地失去了发展进步、走向世界的机遇 ,并为此在其后的历史进程中 ,付出了极为沉重的代价

The Exchanges Between the East and the West in the Eighteenth Century and Chinese World Outlook

In the eighteenth century, the crucial period of historical course, Ancient China neither made use of missionaries, the special media, to have exchanges with western countries to promote Chinese science and technology, nor did it take the opportunity of the foreign delegation to China to develop regular international exchanges and trade. When the west tried to understand the east and the world approached China, the civilized ancient China disdained to understand the west and contact western countries, keeping the circumstances unchanged, so that it lost one after another the opportunities of being open to outside world and developing itself, and paid a great deal for it in the later historical course.
