Analysis of the correlation between osteoarthritis and osteoporosis

Osteoporosis(OP)and osteoarthritis(OA)are two common senile diseases.As China’s population ages,they have become two major bone and joint diseases affecting the quality of life of the elderly.To further illustrate the interrelationship between osteoarthritis and osteoporosis,we summarized the possible connections based on the latest domestic and international researches on the correlation between osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.We found that the possible relationships between osteoporosis and osteoarthritis:①Positive correlation:A higher bone mineral density not only delayed and hindered the occurrence of OP,but also played a positive role in delaying the development of OA;Osteoporosis might be one of the causes of osteoarthritis;There were also similarities in pathogenesis.②Negative correlation:High bone mineral density could reduce the risk of fracture in OP patients,but increased the risk of OA.③No correlation.In terms of treatment,there have been many studies trying to apply osteoporosis drugs(bisphosphonates,calcitonin,vitamin D3,estrogen,etc.)to treat osteoarthritis.Physical therapy,exercise therapy,ultrasound,vibration and other therapies may work for both OP and OA.
