Abstract:Extravascular pulmonary water (EVLW) is an important index for evaluation of pulmonary edema. EVLW is independently associated with mortality, and positive treatment can improve the prognosis of patients with pulmonary edema. CT and MRI can accurately assess hydropneumonia, but not suitable for real-time measurement. Single thermal dilution technique requires repeated calibration, which is prone to errors. Due of the high acoustic impedance of air, the lung is traditionally considered not suitable for ultrasonic examination. However, the recognition of ultrasound artifacts in diseased lungs promoted the development of ultrasound. Ultrasound B line is a useful and sensitive way for judging the presence and observing dynamic changes of EVLW. With the in-depth study of B line, ultrasound has been more and more applicated for evaluation on EVLW, therefore having great significances for diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary edema.
