Pancreatic exocrine insufciency in chronic pancreatitis patients: diagnosis and treatment

Pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI) secondary to chronic pancreatitis (CP) seriously affects patients'' quality of life. There is no single and widely used method for diagnosis of PEI. Diagnosis of PEI should be based on the patient''s clinical symptoms, nutritional status and pancreatic exocrine function tests. Pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) is the cornerstone of PEI treatment. While, nutrition improvement and lifestyle adjustment are also indispensable aspects of PEI treatment. Therapeutic effect should be monitored during PERT by observing the clinical manifestations of patients, detecting serum nutrients, etc. For patients with poor efficacy of PERT, it is necessary to carefully analyze the cause and formulate corresponding countermeasures.
