Clinical experience of diagnosis and treatment of intracranial infection after ventriculoperitoneal shunt

Objective To investigate the prevention and surgical treatment for intracranial infection after ventriculoperitoneal shunt.Methods The clinical data of 9 patients with intracranial infection after ventriculoperitoneal shunt were analyzed retrospectively,who were admitted to our department from Jan 2007 to Dec 2008.Results Eight patients had recoveredand discharged.One patient with Candida albicans infection left the hospital spontaneously and died afterwards.Conclusion Sterilization is critical to prevent intracranial infection after ventriculoperitoneal shunt.For those patients who were infected should be treated aggressively with intravenous antibiotics and drainage of cerebrospinal fluid from belly cavity.Antibiotics injected into ventricle through reserved shunt pump should be done meanwhile.After the infection is controlled and the removal of all shunt drainage equipment.Triculoperitoneal shunt will be performed afterwards.It is the easy-performed and effective procedure for the treatment of intracranial infection.
