Comparison between high ligation by laparoscopic and open operation for the treatment of varicocele

Objective To compare the therapeutic efficacy between spermatic vein high ligation by laparoscopy and open operation for the treatment of varicocele.Methods 12 cases in laparoscopic high ligation of internal spermatic vein and 12 cases in open operation were retrospectively analyzed from August to December 2009.The operating span,average hospitalization,recurrence rate,and quality of spermium were compared and analyzed.Results The average operating time of laparoscopy was 32.1±2.7min compared with that for open operation,which was 35.8±1.6min.There was no significant difference between the two groups（t=-4.032,P=0.148）.The average hospitalization of laparoscopy was 4.3±0.5d,whereas the average hospitalization of open operation was 8.1±0.3d.There was significant difference between the two groups（t=-24.749,P=0.029）.No recurrence and atrophy of testis were found in the two groups.The quality of spermium of all the cases were improved significantly in the follow-up.Conclusion The two operations can both be effective for the treatment of varicocele,but laparoscopic surgery has less damage and shorter hospitalization.
