Decompressive craniectomy for the treatment of severe traumatic brain injury(45 cases reported)

Objective To explore the therapeutic outcome of decompressive craniectomy in the treatment of severe traumatic brain injury.Methods Decompressive craniectomy was employed in the treatment of 45 cases of severe traumatic brain injury.Results Of the 45 cases,29 recovered well.8 were moderately disabled,and 3 severely disabled.Two were in a vegetative state and one died.Conclusion Decompressive craniectomy for the treatment of severe traumatic brain injury may have fine decompressive effect and can entirely remove the supratentorial intracranial hematoma and necrotic brain tissue.It may improve patients＇ survival rate and reduce their fatality and invalidity rate so as to enhance their living quality.
