| Abstract: | The changes in skin pathology and transcutaneous oxygen tension (TcPO_2) of legs were studied in 26 patients with venous insufficiency and 15 normal subjects. The results demonstrated: (1) biopsies from ulceration and pigmentation areas showed pericapillary fibrin deposition, and (2) TcPO_2 levels in pigmentation or ulceration areas of patients with severe venous disease were significantly lower than those of similar areas in the control group and in patients with venous insufficiency but no skin charges. It is concluded that extravascular deposition of fibrin in patients with venous disease will block the diffusion and exchange of oxygen between the blood and tissue, which is the most important factor in the development of venous ulcerations. |
