That means, that one must scrutinize the point of stabilisation obtained by operative treatment, the healing-process of the bone, and the subjective condition of the patient. After healing without any complications, the implants can be taken off according to experience. If there is any sign of delayed ossification, however, one must decide individually in every case.The same criteria, which are valid for primary osteosynthesis, are valid both for corrective operations and pseudarthrosis, too. In the event of an osteomyelitis, the material is always taken off, when its task, the stabilisation, is no longer accomplished, or when the ossification is satisfactory. After ossification the implant should be taken off in any case, except there exist contraindications such as narcotic problems, old age and other diseases, which are well to the fore.From the above mentions results, that there are no common rules for taking off an implant; moreover, in the question of removing the implant, there is decisive exclusively the degree of ossification such as visible in the roentgenogram.
