Abstract:Objective To observe the hemodynamics of the internal carotid artery (ICA) of infants and young children with phase contrast cine MRI (PC cine MRI), and to evaluate their cerebral blood flow (CBF). Methods Data of 37 infants and young children who underwent MR examination were retrospective analyzed. The peak velocity (VP) and blood flow of ICA were measured using PC cine MR sequences with multiple velocity encodings, and unit volume CBF was calculated. The relationships between age (weeks) and ICA VP, ICA blood flow, ICA diameter, CBF and brain volume, as well as between ICA VP and ICA diameter, heart rate were analyzed with Pearson linear correlation. Results Age was found positively correlated with ICA blood flow, ICA diameter, CBF and brain volume (all P<0.01), negatively correlated with heart rate (P<0.01),but not correlated with ICA VP (P=0.532).Among the fitting curves of age and CBF, R2 of cubic polynomial was the highest (R2=0.612). There was no significant correlation of ICA Vp and ICA diameter, nor between ICA Vp and heart rate (both P>0.05). Conclusion PC cine MRI could be used to non-invasively observe the hemodynamics of ICA of infants and young children, providing information for quantitative evaluation on brain development.
