Abstract: | ObjectiveTo study the frequency of a cytological result of atypical glandular cells of unknown significance/atypical glandular cells, not otherwise specified (AGUS/GAC-NOS) in the pap smear and the final diagnosis in patients with this result.Subjects and methodsWe retrospectively analyzed data from three hospitals in three provinces of the Basque Country: Txagorritxu in Vitoria, Basurto in Bilbao and Donostia Hospital in San Sebastian. Cytological studies with a diagnosis of AGUS/GAC-NOS were gathered and the results in these patients were analyzed.ResultsOf the total number of cases of AGUS/GAC-NOS in the three hospitals, 44.02% were pathological, 23.65% were high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions and 20.37% corresponded to malignant disease: squamous carcinoma in 5.37% and adenocarcinoma in 15%.ConclusionsThese data show that, although cases of AGUS/GAC-NOS are infrequent, a high percentage shows pathological findings. Consequently, meticulous initial investigation and long-term monitoring are required since these patients are at high risk. |
