| Abstract: | bjective:To study the relationship between serum cholesterol level and suicidal attempt in schizophrenic patients.Method:The serum cholesterol level of 78 schizophrenia patients who had attempted suicide were compared to those of 46 schizophrenic patients without such attempts.Results:The serum cholesterol levels of patients with attempted suicide were siginficantly lower than those of patients without attempted suicide . Serum cholesterol level was negatively and linearly correlated with the severity of suicidal behaviour.Discussion:Low serum cholesterol level is a potential biological marker of suicidal behaviour.Further studies should use larger sample number,patients with other psychiatric disorders, and include the concurrent study of 5-HT function in CSF. |
