Research on Chinese materia medica should be based on clinical practice--Suggestions about study on Chinese herbal formulas

Some national esteemed doctors of Traditional Chinese Medicine （TCM） in China have worried that modern research on Chinese material medica （CMM） has been westernized, and that TCM will perish due to such modernization. By providing examples from laboratory research and clinical experiences, this paper discusses why there is such a saying, and the errors in prior studies on Chinese herbal medicine. Studies on CMM should not simply copy the methods for developing Western drugs, i.e. focusing only on chemical and pharmacological study of ingredients. The author here provides insight into the important role of incorporating TCM theories and the clinical applications of herbal formulas to the study of CMM.
