Relationship between blood pressure and waist circumference among college students in a university of Anhui Province

Objective To understand the status of blood pressure and waist circumference and their relationship in college students in Anhui Province, so as to provide the evidence for the hypertension prevention. Methods The blood pressure and waist circumference of 1 936 college students in a university were measured. Results The prevalence of high-normal blood pressure in the female was significantly lower than that in the male （1.3 % vs. 16.0 % , x2= 13.564, P〈0. 01）. The mean waist circumference in the male with high-normal blood pressure was significantly higher than that in the male with normal blood pressure （t = 4. 24, P 〈 0.01）; the mean waist circumference in the female with highnormal blood pressure was higher than that in the female with normal blood pressure, but the difference was not significant （t = 1.46,P=0.144）. There was a significant and positive correlation between waist circumference and blood pressure both in the male and female college students. Conclusious The waist circumference is positively related to blood pressure and may be a valuable predictive indicator of hypertension.
