Abstract: | Endotoxic lipopolysaccharides (LPS) isolated from Fusobacterium are similar to those of Salmonella with respect to chemical composition, O-antigenic specificity and endotoxic activity. Bacteroides LPS are highly atypical with respect to the chemical composition, and their endotoxic activity is low. O-Antigenic specificity is present. B. fragilis LPS is chemotactic for polymorphonuclear leukocytes in vitro and in vivo. The chemotactic activity is brought about by activation of the alternative complement pathway. |
