| Abstract: | C57BL/6mice were
irradiated With 75 mGy X-rays at a dose rate of 12.5mGy/minAt different time intervals
following irradiation, mice were sacrificed and histological sec-tions of the thymus were
examined for the rate of mitosis and pyknosis in the cortex, medullaand at the
cortico-medullary boundary Significant increase in mitotic rate was observed withoutchanges in
the percentage of pyknotic cells 3, 4 and 7 days after irradiation。 In another experi-ment,
thymocyte suspensions were stained with propidium iodide (PI) followed by flow cytome-try to
assess the percentage of dead cells from 12 hours to 7 days after 75 mGy irradiation No
in-crease in percentage of PI stained cells was found. It is concluded that whole-body
irradiation(WBI) with 75 mGy X-rays promotes cell proliferation in the thymus without a
concommitantincreased fatalitv rate of the thymocytes |
