Yijing (epidemic encephalitis B): an example of epidemic diseases diagnosed and treated with Contemporary Chinese medicine

It has a long history that the epidemic diseases treated with Chinese medicine. Before the finding and application of penicillin Chinese medicine made a contribution to the treatment of epidemic diseases in the world. This contribution reached the top with the formation and improvement of "the doctrine of epidemic diseases" in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The knowledge of the causes of epidemic diseases in Chinese medicine was not only about pathogens, but also about the interaction between cause and organism. Chinese medicine is to understand cause through the symptoms presented after the cause effecting on an organism, which is the method of differentiating symptoms to find the cause. The method is reliable proved by Chinese prosperity. In modern times Chinese medicine did not play its role fully in prevention and treatment of epidemic diseases because it was ignored at the beginning of epidemic situation, and then it would be involved in as the situation was pressing. It shows that the Party and state policy of Chinese medicine needs further implementation seriously. It may be rated as a good example that Yijing (epidemic encephalitis B) was prevented and treated with contemporary Chinese medicine. This paper introduced in detail the experiences on treating Yijing with Chinese medicine, emphasized the advantages of Chinese medicine to the treatment of epidemic diseases and expected to be a reference for future epidemic situation.
