Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate the effect of different etching times on the bond strength between porcelain and composite resin. Methods: The surface of porcelain was etched with 5% or 2.5% hydrofluoric acid for seven different time periods from 0s to 180s respectively and then the shear bond strength between the etched porcelain and composite resin was measured after immeresed in water for 24h. Results: Composite resin did not bond to unetched porcelain but bonded to etched porcelain, the 150s etch gave the highest bond strength, and the diffenence is significant at the level of P =0.05, no matter 5% or 2.5% of the acid was used. Conclusion:Etching of porcelain surface is a reliable method to bond composite resin with porcelain. The time of etching is important for the bonding.
