Childhood emotional and behavioral problems can affect later adult life, such as by increasing the risk of maladjustment and peer rejection in adulthood. Research using innovative study designs is crucial to examine firstborn children's emotional and behavioral problems, and the factors influencing these problems. Empirical research on interventions will be highly important to ensure a healthy transition of firstborn children from only children to non-only children.
