A comparative study of intravenous radiofrequency ablation and endovenous laser ablation for great saphenous varicose veins

Objective To compare the safety and efficacy of intravenous radiofrequency ablation and endovenous laser ablation in the treatment of great saphenous varicose veins.Methods The clinical data of 80 patients with great saphenous varicose veins who treated with intravenous radiofrequency ablation and endovenous laser ablation from April 2018 to December 2018 were analyzed retrospectively.They were divided into radiofrequency group(39 cases)and laser group(41 cases).The incidence of postoperative complications,visual analogue scale(VAS),venous clinical severity score(VCSS)and great saphenous vein closure rate were compared between the two groups.Results The incidence of postoperative complications in the radiofrequency group was 10.2%,which was lower than that in the laser group(29.2%,P=0.034).The VAS of the radiofrequency group at 6 h and 48 h after surgery were(2.13±0.77)and(1.72±0.79)points,respectively,which were lower than that in the laser group(4.54±0.81)and(2.07±0.69)points,respectively].The difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).There was no statistically significant difference in VCSS between the two groups at 3 months after surgeryradiofrequency group:(1.41±0.64)points,laser group:(1.68±0.93)points,P=0.133],as well as the difference in the closure rate of the great saphenous vein at 1 year after surgery(radiofrequency group:97.3%,laser group:97.4%,P=0.985).Conclusion Intravenous radiofrequency ablation for the treatment of varicose veins can achieve a similar effect to intravenous laser ablation,with lower surgery-related complications and less short-term postoperative pain.
