Clinical value of ultrasound in diagnosis of peripheral nerve sheath tumors

Objective To explore the sonographic features anti clinical value of peripheral nerve sheath tumors by high fl＇equency ultrasound. Methods Fortyone patients with peripheral nerve sheath tumors were confirmed by surgery and pathology, then their sonographie features were analyzed. Results Among these 41 cases, 33 cases were ueurilemmomas （ 10 cases in the cervical part, 12 cases in the upper limbs, 5 cases in the lower limbs, 3 cases in the back, 3 cases in the peritoneum）. Most of these were oval hypoeehoic solid tumors （30/33） , with defined margins and capsules. The nerve turned be on one side （11/33）. 8 cases were neurofibromas （5 cases in the upper limbs, 3 cases in the lower limbs）. 6 cases of them were solitaire, with solid homogenous hypoechoic components, fusifonn in shape, with the nerve entering at one end, passing through and confing out at the other. The rest 2 eases were multiple tumors, like pearl-strings. Conclusion High frequency ultrasound can easily demonstrat that there is a certain relationship between the tumors and nerves in the braehial plexus and in the extremities. The characteristics of sonogram can help decide the best mode of surgery.
