Abstract: | Five gravidas presented with severe renal tubular acidosis from paint sniffing. Normal acid-base balance returned within 72 hours with cessation of toluene abuse and standard supportive measures. Fetal heart tracings and dynamic ultrasound parameters were normal in four of five cases. Three of five infants were growth-retarded at birth; two showed anomalies and neonatal hyperchloremic acidosis. These and previous cases of renal tubular acidosis in pregnancy suggest that toluene is teratogenic. |
