Abstract:In a hospital taking care of patients with cancer, 115 consecutive cases of bacteremia have been studied to define their characteristics and to correlate them to the prognosis.Infections caused by gram positive organisms were less lethal than those due to gramnegative bacilli. This was presumably due to the worse clinical condition of the patients presenting bacteremia caused by gram-negative rods and to the relative resistance of these organisms to the antibiotics used for initial therapy. This report emphasizes the need for further investigation of empiric antimicrobial regimens to be used in patients presenting a serious underlying illness, such as cancer, and who are suspected of presenting a serious infection.
