Abstract:Vitamin D not only participates in the calcium and phosphorus metabolism and the skeletal homeostasis as a steroid hormone, but also plays a role as a reproductive hormone. In women, vitamin D is involved in follicular formation and the production of ovarian sex hormones, which affects ovarian reserve function. In men, it can affect semen quality and sperm motility. Vitamin D receptor is widely expressed in the reproductive organs of both sexes, which can affect the fertility and pregnancy outcome of assisted reproductive technology through a variety of mechanisms. However, there is no consensus on whether exogenous vitamin D supplementation improves pregnancy outcomes of infertile patients undergoing assisted reproductive technology. This paper reviews the effect of vitamin D on male and female reproductive function, and discusses whether vitamin D can improve the outcome of assisted reproductive technology.
