THE EFFECT OF PALPATION OF THE CAROTID ARTERY ON ECG (OF SUBJECTS AT RESTING STATE)

It is often recommended that the inteusity of the physical training of an exerciser may be monitoredby his heart rate which is commonly done by palpation of the carotid artery. However, White observed (1977)that palpation of the carotid artery during rest caused a significant decrease of the heart rate (11. 03 beatsper minute) and various morphologic abnormalities were seen on ECG (in 17. 1% of the subjects).According to the date we collected from the 46 physical education students (27 males and 19 females).palpating the carotid artery during rest caused only an insignificant change in the heart rate (a drop of0.93--2.83 beats per minute). and morphologic abnormalities on ECG were shown in 13. 04% of thesubjects. Thus the data suggests that the method of monitoring the pulse rate by palpation of the carotidartery may still be used.
