Abstract: | Summary. The current paper describes a new method of applying cocaine and adrenaline solutions to the mucosa of the nose. A PVA foam wafer is placed within the nasal fossa and hydrated with cocaine and adrenaline solution. The foam swells to conform to the shape of the nasal cavity and delivers the solution evenly to the nasal septum and the lateral nasal wall. This method prevents overspill of cocaine into the postnasal space and therefore decreases systemic absorption of cocaine. The technique has been found to give excellent vasoconstriction and nasal decongestion. |
