Abstract:At different times, malohdialdehydes (MDA) in the retinas and trace element copper in the aqueous and the vitreous were assessed; the changes of electroreti-inography (ERG) and pathology were observed after copper foreign bodies were placed nto vitreous of the rabbits. One day after the placement, the level of MDA increase by about three times in the retinas of the experimental eyes than in the control eyes (P<0.01) and ERG dropped rapidly following increase of copper ions in the vitreous. The increases of concentration of copper ions in the vitreous and MDA in the retinas are closely correlated (P<0.01). At the early stage, the electron micrograph of experimental eyes showed damage of retinal membrane structure rich in oxygen and inner segments. The results indicate that copper-induced lipid peroxidation is an important cause of retinal damage.
