| Abstract: | A prevalence study of depressive symptoms is carried out in a sample of 537 health school students using Zung's self-rating depression scale (SDS). The overall prevalence rate was 22.4% with 95% confidence interval of 20.8% to 28.0% . The prevalence rate of females was much higher than that of males (27.2% vs 18.1%; X2=5.2, P<0.05). An obvious preponderance of females was observed with the items of depressed affect, crying spells, loss of interest in opposite sex, constipation, and emptiness. Risk factor analysis shows that the following variables: poor health status, individual life dissatisfaction, little physical exercise, dysmenorrhea, and the life events of family financial problems, orgument within family, disliking own speciality, cseated or ridiculed, disliking study, conflict with teachers and classmates, and frightened during the past 12 months, are significantiy associated with depressive symptoms. |
