Role of progestogens in threatened abortion: an update

Threatened abortion is a common issue during pregnancy which might progress to spontaneous miscarriage in half individuals with the condition and thought to affect the physical and mental health of women, considerably. In clinical treatment for patients with threatened abortion, progestogen is a usual option to prevent pregnancy loss due to its effects on maintaining pregnancy.The most utilized routes are oral, the intramuscular and vaginal administration.Despite the extensive use of progestogen in the past seventy years, no definite evidence to date has been reported on its efficiency.Combining the domestic and international research progress of the related field in recent years, this article comprehensively evaluates the therapeutic effect of progesterone in patients with threatened abortion and explores whether there are differences between preparations and administration routes, in order to provide reference for its clinical application.
