One of a recently discovered group of genetic anomalies, the “fragile X” chromosome, is now known to be a significant cause of inherited mental retardation in males. A dozen different fragile sites—areas of weakness at specific chromosomal loci—have been observed and identified in vitro, but only the fragile X is definitely associated with any expressed defect.
