The treatment of arthritis of the shoulder joint by double osteotomy

Summary This paper presents the new operation of double osteotomy of the shoulder for the treatment of painful arthritis. The procedure consists of osteotomy without displacement of the necks of both the scapula and the humerus. Sixteen patients who have had this operation have been followed for one to nine years (average 2 years 11 months).The results show good or excellent pain relief in 13 patients and a substantial increase in active abduction in 13 patients. Complications were few and none were serious.A possible reason for the reduction of pain is suggested and the advantages of this operation over arthrodesis and total shoulder replacement are discussed.

Résumé Cet article présente une nouvelle opération de double ostéotomie de l'épaule pour le traitement des périarthrites douloureuses. La méthode consiste en une ostéotomie sans déplacement du col de l'humérus et de l'omoplate. Seize malades qui ont subi cette opération ont été suivis de un à neuf ans (en moyenne 2 ans et 11 mois).Les résultats sont excellents ou bons en ce qui concerne la douleur chez 13 malades. Une notable augmentation de l'abduction active a également été obtenue chez 13 opérés. Les complications sont peu nombreuses et sans gravité.Les auteurs proposent une explication de la sédation des douleurs et discutent les avantages de cette opération par rapport à l'arthrodèse et à l'arthroplastie totale de l'épaule.
