Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of EV-71 infection on level of serum neuron-specific enolase (NSE) in children with hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD). Methods A total of 100 children with HFMD in our hos- pital were randomly collected from April 2011 to November 2012 and enrolled as the HFMD group. The patients were divided into two subgroups according to the results of virus EV-71 antibody detection: EV-71 positive sub- group (n--43) and EV-71 negative subgroup (n=57). Eighty healthy children were selected as the control group. Che- miluminescent methods were performed to detect serum NSE in different groups, which was then compared between the groups. Results Serum NSE level was higher in HFMD group than that in control group (P〈0.01), and higher in EV-71 positive subgroup than that in EV-71 negative subgroup (P〈0.01). Conclusion The level of serum NSE is higher in children with HFMD than that in healthy children, and it is also significantly higher in EV-71 positive pa- tients, which indicates that children with HFMD predispose to nervous system damage, especially those with virus EV-71 infection.
