Abstract:The combined actions of added external dead space (VADS) and inspira-tory resistance (RI) on respiratory pattern,ventilation and respiratory discomfort were studied in 12 healthy male adults under sitting conditions.The results found were:(1)VADS and RI acted synergically in increasing the oral inspiratory pressure amplitude; (PI) and external inspira.ory work rate (WI),the more severe the combined mechanical stress,the more prominent this synergic interaction.(2) No matter what the relative proportions between VADS and RI were,there was a close correlation between the scaling values representing respiratory discomfort caused by loading and the magnitudes of the combined mechanical loads expressed as either P1 or WI in all conditicns studied,(3) VADS of 100-600 ml did not impair the ability of the human respiratory system to regulate PZCO2 and VI during res stive loading,except for resetting the regulated PCO2 level.The significance of our present findings for revising the physiological standard of respiratory protective device is discussed.
