Cross-cultural study on family functioning in patients with major depressive disorder

Objective:To explore the characteristics of family function in patients with major depressive disorder(MDD)from China and America.Method:92 MDD patients from China(Chinese group)and 92 MDD patients from America(American group)were assessed and compared with Family Assessment Device(FAD).Results:The average scores of all dimensions of FAD in both groups were higher than the critical values of healthy family function,indicating that they had unhealthy family function.The scores of dimensions of emotional response and behavior control in FAD in the Chinese group were significantly higher than those of the American group.In the male patients,the scores of affective response dimension and behavioral control dimension in the Chinese group were significantly higher than those in the American group(all P<0.01).In the female patients,the score of behavior control dimension in the Chinese group was significantly higher than that in the American group(P<0.01).There were no significant differences in the all dimension scores of FAD among patients of different genders within the group(all P>0.05).Conclusion:MDD patients in America and China feel unhealthy family function.Chinese MDD patients experience more unhealthy family functions in emotional response and behavioral control.
