A study on the relationship between empathy ability and postpartum depression

Objective:To explore the correlation between empathy and postpartum depression.Method:1366 pregnant women who met the inclusion criteria and returned to hospital for postpartum health care at 42 days after delivery were collected according to the principle of voluntariness,and self-evaluation was carried out by Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale(EPDS)and Interpersonal Response Index Questionnaire(IRI-C).The participants were grouped and compared between groups with the score of EPDS≥9 as the demarcation value.The relationship between EPDS score and IRI-C score was analyzed.Results:A total of 1351 cases of maternal data were included in the analysis,of which 496 cases(36.7%)with EPDS≥9 were included in the depressive symptom group and 855 cases in the non depressive symptom group.There were significant differences in age and occupation distribution between the two groups(both P<0.01).The total IRI-C score and personal distress score in the depressive symptom group were significantly higher than those in the non depressive symptom group,and perspective taking score was significantly lower than that in the non depressive symptom group(all P<0.01).After adjusting for age and occupation,perspective taking score(95%CI:0.87-0.95)and personal distress(95%CI:1.15-1.27)in IRI-C were correlated with the occurrence of postpartum depression(all P<0.01).Conclusion:The impairment of empathy is a risk factor for the occurrence and development of postpartum depression.
