Comparison between Amplatzer septal occluder and surgical closure of secundum atrial septal defect

Objective To compare the clinical efficacy and safety of interventional closure using Amplatzer septal occluder(ASO) with surgical closure of secundum atrial septal defect(ASD) in children.Methods 16 patients who underwent transcatheter ASD closure using ASO and 18 patients who underwent surgical closure of ASD were involved in the study.Patients were underwent UCG,X-ray and ECG after 48 hours,1 month,3 months,6 months,1 year,2 years,3 years after the procedure.The efficacy and safety of both methods were compared.Results The technical success rate was 93.8%(15/16) of the ASO group and 100% of the surgical group.The length of hospital stay and the lost of blood during the surgery of the ASO group were shorter than those of the surgical group.Conclusion The ASO group had less pain and recovered more quickly with less complication than the surgical group.And it didn't require transfusion.Transcatheter closure of ASD using ASO is an alternative to surgery at some extent.The method worths to be applied broadly in the clinical medicine.
